Life is a process, so is film and TV.

Your relationship, your job, your career, the roles you book: none of these are static, fixed, set things like a book, a chair, or a mountain are. Nor are those strictly permanent unchanging things either. They are all processes. Or if you prefer another word for them: a journey, a path, a story. Life is a process. Ongoing.

A romantic relationship may feel like a thing, and it can be tempting to think it’s set-it-and-forget-it, that somehow it can reach a state of being exactly what it is now forever without modification. This is not the case. …

3 elements work together to slow spread: detection, dilution and distance

Preventing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is vital. It is the three elements, detection, dilution and distance, that together decrease the odds of spread. All three to be COVID free. Missing any possible countermeasure makes spreading more likely. This conceptualization of limiting spread was devised for film and television sets, but holds for any workplace, school or anywhere people gather or spend time together.

It is a trifecta working together, like three legs of a stool. This triad is needed, together, to minimize the hazard:

“Make it a vassal state,” was the simple plan, as expressed by the General to us back on January 10, 2021. And so began our training and placement for today. It had been a couple of years to get us here, but that made sense: how long does it take to plan the hobbling of an empire.

I had handed a pry bar to a local moments ago. We referred to them as locals, the native citizens brought in to bulk up the action on the Capitol, White House and to make feinting riots in the state capitals.

Years of…

a sort of poem

Icarus knew. As the sunlight burned closer, he knew. The height would be worth it, he had to have it. Even as the wax began to run down, and scald his back, the heavens embraced him. His skin singed, his smile grew, for all along, everything before had lead to this. Complete worth. As the wings pulled away, the wind rushing in his ears paused, and for a moment, that lasted a lifetime, he hung there, like a star, suspended above the world, free, and immortal. The air caressed his cheek and began to whip around him again, and his…

some people have the ability to diminish all they touch

Image for post
Image for post

Some people make everything they touch less than it was before they touched it. I’m not referring to people who are negative and naysayers on the surface. The people I’m talking about lack some basic element, like empathy or compassion, so everything they do is infused with a subtle but corrosive lack. This lack permeates what they do and their relationships. We all have lacks, flaws or things we aren’t strong at. This lack is a Midas touch for inflicting pain, on themselves and everyone they encounter.

To put it…

Focus on what you do

Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory. — Hartley Burr Alexander

There is no luck. At least not that matters for us as we make our choices. Yes, things outside of us can conspire in our favor, but since they are outside of us, they are not our concern.

A colleague taught me this last month: focus on your process, the root, not the fruit. …

Feeling feelings well is possible, and so worthwhile.

My feelings: I don’t know how to organize them. And so have often made decisions and taken actions to try to settle them, cope with them and manage them from the outside. Not knowing how to sort them, or feel them well and not be totally overwhelmed and diminished and deactivated and just suffer them, I was and have been (and am) left to try to endure them and fight against them.

It’s like if there were a shelf inside me, I could put them on, each with a labeled slot, a place, for it to live and be, that…

POETRY

An almost poem

There is relief at the moment peril ends and damage begins. Qualified relief. Up to then, it is all anticipation, and when danger turns to harm the anticipation is over: the fight has begun. There is simplicity in this impact. Once hazard shifts to injury, an absolute logic comes into play, it offers a semblance of a break from nuance. There is no subtlety in the struggle to survive. Clarity is the only and inadequate compensation for fears becoming present tense destruction.

Rolling devastation brings with it a new horror: chronic loss. An ever-widening wound conducts the…

Also called box breathing, all you need is the ability to breathe, and more clarity, calm, and focus are yours.

Sometimes, in times of stress and anxiety and when facing a challenging situation like a meeting/call back/camera is up on set, it is useful to square one’s breathing.

How to Square Your Breathing

  1. Breath in on a 4 count
  2. Hold it for 4 counts
  3. Breathe out on a 4 count
  4. Hold it for 4 counts
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for 5 minutes (or as long as feels useful)

This body hack does many things at once. Box breathing helps physically, emotionally, and cognitively. It physically reduces the stress symptoms in the body. It can elevate your emotional state positively. …

More things are possible without judgments

…when you honor ALL of the journey, and you make no judgements about yourself for anything that hasn’t happened or you haven’t accomplished yet, you are free.

- Wendy Braun

I’ve said before: Nobody Knows Anything. A retrospective is tempting as the year wraps up. Remember, the end of the year is an arbitrary marker in time. You still have the opportunity to make your goals happen.

You cannot possibly know whether something is good or bad, in any objective sense. If there even is such a thing as an objective good or bad. Not fun to admit, but my…
